Some heroes use their fists, others use magic and some even avoid fighting by using their wits. However, a staple of almost every medium of entertainment are legendary, one of a kind weapons. Today, I would like to share five of my favourites.

  1. Soultaker (DC Comics)

Soultaker

Soultaker is a katana wielded by the vigilante Katana. Before Katana took on a life of crime-fighting, Katana was Tatsu Yamashiro but found her life destroyed when her brother-in-law, who she had initially rejected in favour of his brother, came to her house and challenged her husband to a duel. Using a magical sword gifted to him by the Yakuza chapter he worked for, Tatsu’s brother-in-law slayed her husband, Tatsu was able to disarm him with her martial arts training and eventually came to America.

Soultaker will occasionally trap the soul of a slain enemy and allow for the one who wields the sword to commune with the trapped spirit. The spirit of Katana’s husband is one of the more notable spirits that have been trapped in the sword. Soultaker is part of a pair of katanas, both forged by the legendary swordsmith, Muramasa.

  1. The Colt (Supernatural)

The Colt.jpg

The best weapon for someone who hunts the supernatural is a gun that can kill almost anything. A semi-major plot device for the first six seasons of Supernatural, the Colt is a magical Colt Paterson, crafted by hunter and gunsmith Samuel Colt. Imbued with magic, the Colt can kill all but five beings in existence.

The existence of the Colt is initially made aware to the Winchester brothers after they discover their father has been looking for it as a way to kill the demon that killed their mother. Originally crafted with 13 bullets, the Winchester brothers inherited the weapon with 5 remaining. However, their friend and mentor Bobby found a way to craft more for the gun.

The Colt’s current whereabouts are unknown.

  1. TheVictory Rifle (Fallout 3)

Every weapon has a unique variant in the Fallout universe. The sniper rifle has two unique forms- The Reservist’s Rifle and the Victory Rifle.  The Victory Rifle is found in the sniper shack overlooking Rockbreaker’s Last Gas and needs a maxed-out lockpick skill to acquire. Despite having a reduced magazine and lower chance base chance of a critical hit when compared to the regular sniper rifle. The Victory Rifle’s bonus is that any critical hit will knock an opponent over, giving you a significant tactical advantage over your opponent. The rifle also has three times the HP of a regular rifle. From full HP, it can fire around 250 rounds before breaking and becoming unusable.

  1. Darth Maul’s Lightsaber (Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace)

There were very few ‘good’ things to come out of the Star Wars prequels. Darth Maul may be one of the woefully underused villains of all time as we see him for about ten minutes, watch him take down a Jedi master and then lose because he was suddenly afflicted with screenwriter stupidity, allowing for Obi-Wan Kenobi to survive. Darth Maul’s signature weapon is a dual-bladed lightsaber, giving the Sith a unique method of fighting, which incorporates more blocks and parrying than the fighting style of an ordinary lightsaber user. The fight scene in which we truly see Darth Maul’s prowess is by far the highlight of a terrible Star Wars movie. A close runner-up is Kylo Ren’s lightsaber with the lightsaber cross guard from The Force Awakens, which loses out because I haven’t seen the film yet.

  1. High Frequency Blade (Metal Gear Solid: Revengence)

HFB.jpg

Cyborg Raiden has quite the arsenal at his disposal but nothing is cooler than the High Frequency Blade. Using video game science, the sword’s oscillation weakens the molecular bonds of an object, making it easier to cut through. The sword is single-edged, meaning that Raiden can utilise it for both cutting and clubbing actions. If used by someone with a high proficiency in swordsmanship, the blade can be used to deflect bullets. A cool non-canon note about the blade- in one of their ‘Death Battles’, the Youtube channel ScrewAttack determined that the blade would be instrumental in a fight between Raiden and Wolverine of the X-Men, as the blade’s oscillation would be enough to be able to cut through Wolverine’s Admantium skeleton, essentially nullifying one of Wolverine’s biggest advantages over enemies.

What are some of your favourite fictional weapons? Let me know!
